How To Choose The Best Wireless Mouse For Music Production

When choosing a new wireless mouse, there are a few things you’ll want to pay attention to.

Customizable Buttons – All the mice on the list below have customizable buttons, these buttons can be easily mapped to perform different functions in your DAW and can make your music production workflow much quicker and easier.

Horizontal Scrolling – In music production, you often need to scroll horizontally through your DAW. Of course, any mouse can scroll horizontally by holding down the shift key on your keyboard and then scrolling using the regular scroll wheel. But if you get a mouse with a dedicated horizontal scroll wheel, it can make working with your DAW quite a bit easier.

Ergonomics – Seeing as you will end up using your mouse for hours on end, you’ll definitely want to make sure it’s comfortable to use. And shaped in a way that it won’t give you hand, wrist, or arm pain after extensive periods of use.

Right Or Left Handed – If you’re left-handed, this is definitely going to be something you’ll want to think about. Whilst most standard mice are ambidextrous, a lot of fancier ergonomic mice with lots of buttons are only practical for right-handed use. That being said, I’ve made sure to include some great ambidextrous options.

Trackball Or Regular – With a trackball mouse, instead of moving it around the desk to control the cursor, it stays in one place and you swivel a ball to control the cursor. This can be difficult to get the hang of, but once you do it can make your editing easier and more precise.

If your hand, wrist, or arm gets sore during long editing sessions, a trackball mouse could be the way to go.

Instead of moving it around the desk like you would with a regular mouse.

A trackball mouse stays in one spot on the desk, and move the cursor around the screen by swiveling the ball with your thumb.

It can take quite a bit of getting used to when you first try it, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it to be more comfortable. And you’ll be able to move around the timeline and make edits in your DAW much more efficiently.

Another advantage of a trackball mouse is that it won’t need as much space on your desk. With a regular mouse, you need space for the mouse, and space to move it around.

But with a trackball mouse, you won’t be moving it around so you won’t need nearly as much space for it.

This particular trackball mouse from Logitech has a nice ergonomic design that still somewhat resembles a regular mouse, which can be good if you’ve never tried a trackball mouse before.

It has 3 customizable buttons that can be mapped to perform various different tasks which can seriously speed up your music production workflow.

And It’s powered by one AA battery that is supposed to last for 18 months, but it could go flat a little bit sooner if you use it a lot.

Unfortunately, the way this mouse is designed, it will really only be practical for right-handed people. (If you’re left-handed but still want a trackball mouse, take a look at the option below)

But if you’re right-handed and looking for an affordable, ergonomic, trackball mouse to speed up your workflow, this is probably the one for you.

The Kensington Wireless Expert is obviously another trackball mouse, so I’m not going to waste your time telling you why you’d want a trackball mouse.

Instead, I’m going to tell you what’s different about this one.

The biggest difference between the Kensington expert and the Logitech M70 is the different designs. Rather than being the shape of a regular mouse with a trackball added on the side, this one is more of a square shape with a trackball in the middle.

It might feel a little more strange if you’re coming from a regular mouse, but once you get the hang of it you will find it to be very comfortable and easy to use.

Due to its square shape design, you’ll be able to use it whether you’re right or left handed which is a huge bonus for left-handed people.

Unlike the Logitech M570, it doesn’t have a scroll wheel. Instead, there is a  ring around the trackball can be used to very easily scroll up and down web pages, or more importantly, side to side through the timeline in your DAW.

If you take a look at the picture above, you’ll notice it has 4 different click buttons positioned at each corner of the device, these can all be customized to perform different functions, as well as acting as the left and right click buttons.

And Centered in the very middle, is a nice big trackball that makes moving the cursor around very easy.

The Kensington Expert also comes with a detachable wrist pad for added comfort during long editing sessions.

So if you’re looking for a nice big, wireless, trackball mouse to add to your music production setup, this is probably the one for you.

If you’re not sure about the idea of a trackball mouse and would rather use a regular one, a gaming mouse is probably going to be your best option.

And If you want to use a gaming mouse for music production, the Logitech G604 will not disappoint.

What’s probably the most impressive thing about this mouse, is the 15 customizable buttons, these can all be mapped to perform different functions in your DAW and can hugely speed up your workflow.

The size and shape of the G604 give it quite a nice in-hand feel, and the soft rubbery texture makes it more comfortable to hold for longer periods of time.

The only real downside would be that it is a little bit heavier than some other wireless mice. It’s not too heavy, but it’s just something to keep in mind.

Another thing you might want to keep in mind is that it’s not the best option for left-handed people. While it can be used with your left hand if you really want to, the thumb rest and 6 of the customizable buttons are really only useable if you’re right-handed.

But if you’re right-handed, and looking for a good, wireless mouse with plenty of customizable buttons, then this is probably the one for you.

If you’re left-handed, or you really like the look of RGB lights, the Razer Lancehead is probably the way to go.

It has a nice comfortable ambidextrous design which makes it a pleasure to use whether you’re left or right handed.

It has 9 customizable buttons that can all be mapped to different functions in your DAW, which is not quite as many as the 15 on the Logitech G604, but it’s still quite a lot and can drastically speed up your workflow.

If you’re a fan of RGB lighting, you will appreciate the customizable lights found all through this mouse. But if you’re not a huge fan of this aesthetic, you can quite easily disable these lights in the settings.

The only slight downside to this mouse is that it has to be recharged occasionally. It’s not a big deal as it can last up to 50 hours on a single charge and it’s fairly easy to plug it in with the included cable.

But it’s not quite as easy as the other mice on this list where you just have to replace the AA battery once or twice a year.

So if you’re after a great ambidextrous mouse, or you want a wireless mouse with RGB lighting, then this is probably the one for you.

If you’re after a super ergonomic wireless mouse with a sideways scrolling wheel, the MX Master 3 won’t let you down.

It has a really nice ergonomic shape so you can comfortably wrap your hand around it and edit for hours on end without getting any wrist or hand pain.

But where it really stands out as a good option for music production is the horizontal scrolling wheel, this will allow you to effortlessly scroll side to side along the timeline in your DAW without even having to think about it.

It has 6 different customizable buttons that can all be mapped to different functions in your DAW and speed up your workflow. While 6 buttons aren’t quite as many as the 15 you get in the Logitech G604, they’re still nice to have.

Another thing I should probably mention is the charging. Because while it does need to be plugged in to charge which is a slight inconvenience. A full charge will last you up to 70 days which is pretty good.

And the quick charging means a 1-minute charge can give you 3 hours of use which is handy if you get caught off guard when it goes flat in the middle of an editing session.

The only real downside would be that it’s not ideal for left-handed use, while you could use it with your left hand if you want, the thumb rest, horizontal scroll, and two of the customizable buttons are all laid out in such a way that it’s really only practical for right-handed people.

But if you’re right-handed, and you’re looking for an awesome wireless mouse with a horizontal scroll wheel, this is the one for you.
