Best Laptop For DJing

If you’re a DJ or an aspiring DJ, it is vitally important you have a laptop that will be able to handle the demands of DJing.

When choosing a laptop for DJing, you’ll want to make sure it has a powerful processor, lots of RAM for handling multiple tracks simultaneously and a large SSD (Solid State Drive) so that you have room to store all your music tracks and play them quickly.

Additional features that are not necessarily must-haves but could be handy are a high quality screen so that you can easily see your tracks even if the lighting is bad, and high quality built in speakers so you can clearly hear your work when you’re off the stage.

Ideally, a good DJing laptop will have a good selection of ports for hooking up to any additional device you might need such as a DJ Controller.

You may be worried that a laptop with all the above features is going to be very expensive, and while a lot of the laptops mentioned in this article are on the higher end of the price range, we have included some more reasonably priced ones for those who are on a budget.

At the time of writing this article, the Macbook Pro is the most expensive option in this list, but if you prefer to use Mac OS over Windows, this is most likely going to be your best option.

Whilst it doesn’t have the most powerful specs of the laptops in this list, it’s still a very powerful laptop with an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM allowing it to easily handle the demands of DJing.

For storage, it has a 512GB SSD so you should have plenty of space to store all your tracks.  It also has a nice high-quality screen, great quality internal speakers and up to 10 hours of battery life.

It also has some cool features like the touch bar and touch ID so you can unlock it with your finger.

The port selection is in some ways a weakness and in other ways a strong suite. It doesn’t have a wide selection of ports, just four Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB-C) and a headphone jack.

This is a good thing because thunderbolt ports are the port of the future and are very useful for connecting a USB-C hub. but it may also be inconvenient to not have any other options like USB, HDMI and many more, that’s not to say you can’t connect a USB to it, you would just have to use a USB-C hub.

So overall, this is a very good laptop with plenty of helpful features and if you can afford the higher price tag, it may be the one for you.

The Razer Blade 14″ is also quite a highly priced laptop but it is a very powerful device.

With a 7th Gen Intel Quad Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of RAM, it should certainly be up to the task of handling the demands of DJing.

For storage, it has a 512GB SSD so you should have heaps of space to store all your tracks.

As for ports, it has 3 USB 3.0 ports, a headphone jack, an HDMI port and a USB-C port that could be used for connecting a USB-C hub.

One stand out feature it has that could be really handy is a matte display making it easier to see the screen even if there’s a bright light shining on it.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few reviews on Amazon.com from people saying they’ve had issues with the laptop being faulty and the customer support not being very helpful (click here to read them), so that is certainly something to keep in mind.

So overall, it’s a powerful laptop with a helpful matte screen but the unfortunate downside of the possibility of receiving a faulty product.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar III is certainly an impressively powerful laptop, with a six core 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H processor and 16GB of RAM it should have no trouble handling the demands of DJing.

For Storage, it has a massive 1TB SSD so you will have heaps of space to store all your tracks.

As for ports, it has a USB-C port which could be handy for connecting a USB-C hub, 3 USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI port, a headphone/microphone jack and an Ethernet port which you don’t often see in laptops these days but it could be handy if you want to connect to a wired internet connection.

If you are willing to spend a bit more than the starting price, you can even upgrade it to have up to 64GB of RAM and 2TB SSD!

So overall, it’s a really powerful laptop with a handy port selection and very impressive specs, it could certainly be a great choice for DJing.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is a bit different from all the other devices on this list.

The keyboard and trackpad are not actually attached to the device, so while it’s fully capable of doing everything a laptop can, it can also be lifted away and used as a tablet.

You will have to consider whether or not you want this functionality because on one hand, it can be quite convenient to pick it up and walk around with it being a tablet, but on the other hand, it can be kind of difficult if you want to use it as a laptop sitting on your lap.

Being a tablet like device doesn’t mean it is less powerful, with a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 and 8GB or 16GB of Ram it should have no trouble handling the demands of DJing.

The storage is on the smaller side of the laptops on this list, with a 256GB SSD you should have enough space to store all your tracks but it’s not quite as impressive as the 1TB SSD in the ASUS ROG.

For ports, it has 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB-C port which could be used to connect a USB-C hub, a micro SD card reader, a headphone/microphone jack and a Surface Connect™ port which is a port created by Microsoft for easily docking your surface pro.

So overall it’s a fairly different take on the traditional laptop, but with its powerful specs and additional convenience, it might just be for you.

If you like the look of the Surface Pro 7, but aren’t sure about the tablet style, the Microsoft Surface Laptop just might be for you.

Much like the Surface Pro, the Surface Laptop has an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 and 8 or 16GB of RAM so it will certainly be able to handle the demands of DJing.

For Storage, there is a choice between a 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB SSD so, depending on what you choose, you should have plenty of space for all your tracks.

As for ports, it has 1 USB 3.0, a headphone/microphone jack, a Mini DisplayPort and a Surface Connect™ port. Unfortunately, there is no USB-C port so that is definitely something to keep in mind.

It also has “Invisible Omnisonic Speakers” that deliver omnidirectional sound which could certainly be a plus when you’re preparing your tracks.

So overall, this is a nice laptop that could just be the device for you if you are interested in a Surface device but aren’t too sure about the tablet form factor.

The Lenovo Yoga 720 is a bit of a different take on having a laptop and tablet in one device.

Instead of detaching from the keyboard and trackpad like the Surface Pro does, the keyboard on the Lenovo Yoga flips around behind the screen.

It has a 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of RAM so it should certainly be able to handle the demands of DJing.

As for storage, it has a 512GB SSD which is not quite the 1TB available in other devices on this list but you should still have plenty of space to store all your tracks.

For ports, it has 1 USB-C port that could be used for connecting a USB-C hub, 1 USB 3.1 port, 2 USB 3.0 ports and a headphone/microphone jack.

It also has JBL Stereo Speakers with Dolby Audio which would certainly be nice for listening to your tracks as you work on them.

Another nice feature it has is a fingerprint scanner which makes it quick and easy to unlock the device.

Unfortunately, a lot of reviews on Amazon.com say there is a black bar that can develop on the screen over time, so you may want to keep that in mind and perhaps look into getting insurance or using the manufacturer warranty.

So overall, it’s a powerful laptop with the added flexibility of being able to flip into a tablet and nice features like JBL speakers and a fingerprint scanner. As long as you keep the black bar in mind, it could be the laptop for you.

At the time of writing this article, the Huawei Matebook 13 is one of the cheapest options on this list and could certainly be an option for those of you on a budget.

With an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8265U Processor and 8GB of RAM, it’s not quite as powerful as some of the other devices on this list but it should still be able to handle the demands of DJing.

As for storage, it has a 256GB SSD so you should have enough space to store all your tracks.

The port selection is fairly minimalistic with just 2 USB-C ports and a headphone/microphone jack.

Something to keep in mind is this means there are no USB A ports so you will have to use a USB-C hub or a USB-C to USB-A adapter if you want to connect any USB devices.

So overall, it’s a fairly powerful budget-friendly laptop and if you’re on a budget and the lack of USB ports doesn’t bother you then this could be the laptop for you.

At the time of writing this article, the Acer Swift 3 is certainly the cheapest laptop in this list and could definitely be an option if you’re on a budget.

With an AMD Ryzen 7 2700U Quad-Core Processor and 8GB of RAM, it’s not the most powerful laptop on this list but it should still be able to handle the demands of DJing.

For storage, it has a 256GB SSD so it might not be able to store every project you’ve ever worked on but there should be plenty of space to store all the tracks you need.

For ports, it has 1 USB-C port that could be used for connecting a USB-C hub, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, an SD card reader and a headphone/microphone jack.

It also has a few other nice features like up to 9 hours of battery life, a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader so you can unlock it with your finger.

So overall, it’s a great laptop for the price, and could certainly be the laptop for you if you’re on a budget.

  1. Great article mate. My choice would be the Macbook Pro 13 inch. Though a bit expensive compared to other options, nothing can beat the power and reliability of Apple. Even though you spend more at the beginning, your laptop will remain with you for years to come.
